The Termini Hungarian Language Research Network has been actively participating for the third year in the Educational Terminology Subproject of the Terminology Strategy Programme operating under the auspices of the ELTE Hungarian Research Centre for Linguistics. As a result of coordinated work, an eight-language, or together with English, a nine-language educational terminology database is being developed, which may make a significant contribution to the formation and consolidation of a more linguistically unified higher education area in the Carpathian Basin. As a result of the work of the team led by Professor Gábor Prószéky, an educational terminology database is taking shape that may serve as a useful tool both in translation and in all activities in which various aspects of linguistic transfer come to the fore.
Research clearly shows that the aim of Hungarian national communities living in cross-border regions is to preserve and strengthen their identity, language and culture, and to be able to find their place in a globalising yet simultaneously regionalising world. It is also important that they possess the knowledge and competences that enable them to formulate their responses to constantly reproducing and renewing challenges. In achieving these aims, education in the mother tongue plays a particularly decisive role. Without mother-tongue education, the functional decline and loss of domains of the Hungarian language become inevitable, while the preservation of Hungarian identity becomes impossible.
The study briefly presents the linguistic situation of the Hungarian national community in the Prekmurje region, the most important features of the bilingual public education model, and the linguistic situation and aspirations of higher education in Slovenia, including bilingual higher education. It points out the most important facts, the relationship between Slovenian higher education and the Hungarian language, as well as the limitations, obstacles and opportunities related to the development and implementation of Hungarian-language terminology. It does so by presenting several tendencies and specific examples from the Slovenian linguistic material prepared so far.
