Abstract

The article analyses the distinctive features of the narrative strategy in “Where the Crawdads Sing” by the contemporary American writer Delia Owens. Drawing on the theoretical principles of Gérard Genette’s narratological framework, the study examines the interaction between the key components of the novel’s narrative architecture: compositional structure, temporal organisation, and focalisation. The study demonstrates that the novel is constructed as a complex polyphonic narrative combining elements of the psychological novel, detective fiction, the Bildungsroman, and ecocritical prose. Its compositional structure is based on the parallel development of two temporal strands: the retrospective account of Kya Clark’s childhood, traumatic experiences, and coming of age, and the detective storyline centred on the investigation into the death of Chase Andrews. This organisation of fictional time creates an effect of anachrony and a distinctive ‘temporal pendulum’, sustaining narrative suspense while gradually revealing the causal relationships between the protagonist’s past and present. The article also examines the role of the expository chronotope, the recurring motif of waiting, and the blue suitcase as a symbolic object in representing the protagonist’s traumatic experience. Particular attention is paid to the novel’s perspectival structure and to the mechanisms governing shifts between internal and external focalisation, including emotional-associative and cognitive-analytical modes of perception. It is shown that the characters’ inner worlds are articulated primarily through the ‘language of nature’. The multifunctionality of the marsh chronotope is also explored, ranging from a space of refuge and self-identification to the scene of a crime and a conceptual symbol of harmony. The study demonstrates that the novel’s narrative strategy is realised through the interaction of compositional organisation, focalisation, and temporal structure. Together, these elements ensure the gradual development of the detective plot, shape readers’ expectations, and simultaneously reveal the psychological evolution of the protagonist.
